Top 10 Oil Companies To Buy Right Now

I hate to break it to you, but growth generated though share buybacks won't last forever. That's the tough lesson that ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) investors are learning these days. Shrinking production is now forcing the company to shave its quarterly buyback program as the recent drop in oil prices is causing earnings growth to slow.

In its recently reported first-quarter earnings, Exxon produced earnings of $9.5 billion. That's a whole lot of money; however, it represents earnings growth of just $50 million from the same quarter last year. That's anemic growth of 1%, yet, because Exxon is an expert at repurchasing shares, its earnings growth appears much higher. The company's $5 billion of share repurchases in the quarter helped increase earnings per share by 6% over last year.

The big sore spot in the quarter came from oil-equivalent production, which slipped 3.5%, though excluding certain impacts, the production decrease was just 1.2%. This came despite the company's spending $11.8 billion on capital and exploration projects. That's up 33% from last year, though it does include the company's $3.1 billion acquisition of Celtic Exploration, which, if backed out, meant the company spent only $8.7 billion on exploration against $8.8 billion in the year-ago quarter.

    A) Halcon Resources (HK) is a US-based oil-weighted producer. I was bearish on Halcon at $8 when I shorted it, for the reasons mentioned here. I also noted then that the traders and the speculators pushed Halcon to an outrageous overvaluation at $8.

    Winners
Given the current state of U.S. energy production, most midstream companies are winners these days. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) got things started off on the right foot, reporting in mid-April and beating expectations on revenue and EPS. Here are some highlights from around the industry:

Buckeye Partners (NYSE: BPL  ) trounced analyst expectations on the top and bottom lines, and recorded a distribution coverage ratio of 1.21 times payouts, allowing the partnership to boost its distribution. DCP Midstream Partners' (NYSE: DCP  ) distributable cash flow popped 40% year over year, and the partnership completed its Eagle Ford dropdown transaction with parent company DCP Midstream, boosting its stake in the lucrative South Texas shale play. Boardwalk Energy Partners' (NYSE: BWP  ) operating revenue and net income increased 5% and 10% year over year. More importantly, distributable cash flow popped 24%, though the partnership elected to hold the distribution flat quarter over quarter. Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP  ) had no distribution increase either, but things are looking better than they have in a while. Production in the Eagle Ford Shale is driving growth at ETP, and the partnership is reorganizing into an operation that is stronger and more diverse than ever before.

Very strong results here, now let's take a look at some midstream companies that didn't perform as well.

The pipeline would deliver the NGLs to new fractionation and storage facilities, which would have connectivity to pipelines along the U.S Gulf Coast. For instance, Magellan Midstream Partners' (NYSE: MMP  ) started up its reversed Longhorn pipeline in April, which provided another 225,000 barrels per day of incremental capacity from West Texas to Houston-area refineries, while Sunoco Logistics Partners (NYSE: SXL  ) is expected to start up its Permian Express project this month, which will provide additional capacity out of the Permian Basin of about 90,000 barrels per day.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Energy has also held the Canadian economy back, with challenges hampering the potential growth in the industry. Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) and TransCanada, for instance, both have huge opportunities to capitalize on prospective new pipelines, yet environmental concerns haven't allowed the companies to work as quickly as they might otherwise to build out energy-transportation infrastructure for hard-to-reach production areas.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Despite the obvious fundamental advantages of increased trade of oil between the two countries, there are still some major political hurdles to conquer. On the Canada-to-U.S. side of the argument, TransCanada's (NYSE: TRP  ) Keystone XL pipeline has been stuck in litigation for several months. The proposed pipeline has the potential to deliver 830,000 barrels per day of oil to refineries in the Gulf of Mexico, a region that is capable of refining about 2.3 million barrels per day of heavy sour crude. The problem, however, is that the pipeline is receiving stiff opposition from political groups over environmental concerns. Other pipelines such as Enbridge's (NYSE: ENB  ) Mainline and Energy Transfer Partner's (NYSE: ETP  ) Trunkline Reversal project have also met some opposition over similar concerns to Keystone XL, but they certainly have not seen as much media attention.

  • [By Arjun Sreekumar]

If constructed, Keystone would transport up to 830,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Alberta's oil sands to Steele City, Neb. From Nebraska, the crude would make its way to Cushing, Okla., from where it would be moved south via Seaway, a major pipeline that runs from Cushing to refineries along the Gulf Coast and is operated jointly by Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) and Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD  ) .

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

In total, the current capacity for oil pipelines delivering all types of crude to the U.S. is about 3.4 million barrels per day. These pipelines are all operated by four companies.

Pipeline Owner/Operator Capacity Destination Express-Platte Spectra Energy (NYSE: SE  ) 280,000 bpd Wood River, Ill. Keystone TransCanada 590,000 bpd Cushing, Okla. Enbridge and Lakehead System Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) and Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE: EEP  ) 2.5 million bpd Multiple, but 190,000 bpd to Cushing, Okla.

For the existing Canada-U.S. pipelines, there is probably little to no effect whether the pipeline gets built or not. The capacity for these pipelines is already contracted out, and a majority of the oil from these pipelines goes to either the Midwest or Rocky Mountain regions.
